Nutritionist Recommends Four Foods for Healthy and Glowing Summer Skin

On the 9th (local time), the British media outlet The Sun introduced four foods recommended by Shona Wilkinson, a senior nutritionist at the UK-based nutrition and supplement brand DR.VEGAN, for maintaining healthy and radiant skin during the summer.

Wilkinson emphasized the importance of diet in maintaining glowing skin, stating, "Diet plays a crucial role in keeping skin radiant, and skincare is especially important during the summer when the skin is more vulnerable to damage." In addition to her role at DR.VEGAN, Wilkinson previously served as a senior nutritionist at the major UK retailer Tesco and authored the 2023 book Supplement Formulae, which focuses on nutrition and supplementation.

She selected cherries, kiwis, avocados, and broccoli as the best foods for healthy skin in the summer.

Cherries

Cherries contain proanthocyanins, a pigment compound found in red fruits with powerful antioxidant properties. These compounds help protect the skin from external environmental damage. The skin’s outer layer, or stratum corneum, naturally sheds and regenerates over time. Proanthocyanins accelerate this process, aiding in the formation of new skin cells, resulting in a brightening effect and a smoother complexion.

Kiwis

Kiwis are rich in vitamin C, which has antioxidant properties that prevent aging and promote collagen production for improved skin elasticity. Each kiwi contains approximately 100mg of vitamin C. Additionally, kiwis are high in dietary fiber, which strengthens the immune system. Since over 70% of immune cells reside in the gut, maintaining gut health is essential for immunity. The fiber in kiwis serves as a prebiotic, nourishing beneficial gut bacteria and improving overall gut health.

Avocados

Avocados are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, a type of unsaturated fat known for its strong anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce acne. Omega-3s also:

  • Strengthen the skin’s protective barrier

  • Maintain moisture within skin cells

  • Reduce inflammation

Avocados are also rich in potassium, vitamin B, vitamin E, and protein, making them an ideal food for combating dry skin. Not only do they enhance skin radiance, but they also protect against skin damage.

Broccoli

Broccoli contains sulfur compounds and beta-carotene, both beneficial for skin health. Sulfur has antibacterial properties that help remove dead skin cells and regulate oil production. Regular consumption of broccoli can help those struggling with oily skin or acne scars.

Additionally, broccoli is rich in beta-carotene, which is converted into vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A is essential for maintaining smooth skin and boosting skin resilience, making it particularly beneficial for individuals prone to acne and skin infections.

By incorporating these nutrient-rich foods into your diet, you can help protect your skin and maintain a healthy, glowing complexion throughout the summer.
